Why does the light come on?

Your vehicle contains sensors that continuously monitor different systems. When the computer detects something outside its expected range, it can store a fault code and illuminate the warning light.

Should you keep driving?

It depends on the situation.

A steady check engine light generally means the vehicle should be inspected soon. A flashing warning light can indicate a more serious issue and may require immediate attention.

If the vehicle is running poorly, losing power, overheating or making unusual noises, don't assume the warning light will resolve itself.

Why diagnostics matter

A diagnostic scanner can identify stored fault codes, but the code isn't necessarily the problem itself.

For example, a sensor-related code doesn't automatically mean the sensor needs replacing. A technician needs to investigate why the sensor is reporting unusual information.
